Welcome to Reader's Theater! I am Mrs. Brown and I am excited to be teaching Reader's Theater here at Forest Pines Drive Elementary School for the 2018-2019 school year. Reading has always been a passion of mine and now I am able to share my love of reading with my students by bringing books alive with drama and persuasive reading.
First through 3rd grade students will have Reader's Theater as one of their Specials for this school year. Students will be using scripts to recreate characters in fiction stories, poetry, folktales, and picture books. It is simply reading a story aloud, like a play, without memorization, props, or a stage. Take a look at the example to see and hear a third grade class performing a short play titled "Pirate's Adventure".
Performing plays engages students and helps them get excited about reading. This helps to build valuable reading skills while increasing comprehension and fluency. Speaking and listening skills are also an important component of Reader's Theater. Finally, students will work on collaborating with their peers in small groups while preparing to perform for the rest of the class.
